Site Identification and Seed Collection

Autumn tree leavesAs a result of centuries of human management and intervention in woodlands, there are relatively few sources of truly indigenous seed in the UK. Suitable sites for seed collection are mostly restricted to ancient semi-natural woodlands, ancient (pre-enclosure) hedgerows and stands of mature scrub. The Initiative has used Natural England’s Inventories of Ancient Woodland, as well as ecological survey data and local historical knowledge in order to research suitable sources of local origin seed within the East Midlands.
It is the Initiative’s aim that, by the end of the initial three-year phase of the project, the majority of suitable sites within the East Midlands will have been registered with the Forestry Commission. This will provide seed collectors and plant nurseries with a wide range of collection sites, thereby expanding both the volume and geographic range of available local origin stock.
